The evidence
These are the results of our own attempts on Prenot@mi, the Italian Ministry booking portal. Nothing here is an estimate.
Honorary consulates cannot handle citizenship applications, and the offices in Hobart and Griffith are currently vacant. There is no other counter to try. We repeat these checks and update this page.
What changed
The second change is the one nobody told you about, and it is the reason the appointments disappeared.
Decree Law 36/2025 limits transmission of citizenship to two generations and adds further conditions for anyone born abroad. The new rules apply to you unless you filed your application, or held a confirmed appointment, before 23:59 Rome time on 27 March 2025. Law 74/2025 later converted the decree with amendments.
Does this affect my line?Under Law 11/2026, of 19 January 2026, each consular post may accept, until 31 December 2028, only a limited number of applications from adults.

Should I act before then?
A right that cannot be filed does not stop existing. It moves to the courts.
The alternative
Recognition of Italian citizenship by descent is the recognition of a status you already hold, not the grant of a favour. Where the conditions of the law are met and the administrative route is unavailable, that status can be claimed before the Italian civil courts. You are not required to travel.
A court is not bound by the yearly ceiling that has closed the consular counters, and it is not the office that will be created in Rome in 2029.
Italian courts have accepted proof of unsuccessful attempts to book a consular appointment, recorded by a notary and filed together with an extract of the consular website. We cannot book consular appointments on your behalf, and neither can anyone else: the Consulates reserve booking to the applicant in person. What we do is assess whether your claim stands, and pursue it where it does. No lawyer can promise you an outcome, and we do not.
Where you stand
Three situations cover almost every family. If you are not sure which one describes you, that is the normal starting point.
Your line sits within the two generations the law allows. What remains to be checked is whether your ancestor kept Italian citizenship, and whether one of the three further conditions applying to people born abroad is met in your family.

That is not automatically the end of the matter: the reform is being tested before the Italian Constitutional Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union. We will tell you frankly which of the two situations yours is.
Ask us where I standItalian law did not allow women to transmit citizenship to children born before 1 January 1948. That rule has been set aside by the Italian courts for decades. These claims go before a court by definition: there has never been a consular counter for them.

That office will receive applications from adults living abroad from 1 January 2029. What it will not do is change the conditions of the law that apply to your line. Whether waiting makes sense in your case is one of the things we assess.
